A Physical Therapist Builds the Mind-Body Connection with BASI Block System

June 14, 2017

by Karen Turner-Schlegel, PT, DPT, MTC

I can’t say enough about how impressed I am with the BASI teacher training program! As a Doctor of Physical Therapy, I have such an appreciation for their dedication to the science of human movement which is combined with the art of proper alignment and execution. Not only has Rael stayed true to the original work of Joseph and Clara Pilates, he has progressed it to adapt to our changing times and medical research. You can’t deny his passionate, highly skilled dedication to the Pilates Method. The result is a phenomenal program that delivers an exceptional quality of movement – Precision! This precision is consistently passed down throughout all the training modules which, in my opinion, far surpass those of any other Pilates teacher training program.

Rael has spent much time and effort developing a BASI Block System that makes biomechanical sense and gives the body a balanced, well-rounded workout. The Block System addresses all planes of movement and multiple muscle groups. This approach can be very effective at reducing injuries because the body is systematically prepared for each exercise.

I combine Pilates with my hands-on Physical Therapy treatment so I have much appreciation for the BASI Pilates training and Block System. My clients come to me because they are in pain or continue to suffer from injuries, yet they want the benefits of exercise. I confidently train all my clients safely, knowing I am providing a high quality workout tailored to their needs. Furthermore, this system is very adaptable to all types of clients of all ages.

The BASI program challenges you to rise above and provide excellence for your clients. Because BASI emphasizes precision of movement, it challenges you as an individual to make the Pilates exercises a regular part of your own workout. Without experiencing the Pilates exercises for yourself, it is hard to transfer that passion and power to your clients. Not only will you feel the changes within yourself, your clients will be more inspired.

Overall, the BASI program creates a sense of confidence, peace and balance in your life! The mind-body connection continues to be a huge part of the program. Without that awareness, the exercises are all for nothing. It is the detail of each exercise that leads to the grounded feeling you have after each workout session. This mind-body connection is so key for my work in Physical Therapy—I have found that clients heal faster when they feel ‘connected’ with their own body. This empowers them to live healthy and thrive doing what they love.

I will continue incorporating my BASI training with all my clients as I see the results of improved posture alignment, strength, flexibility and balance. My clients love it and can’t stop talking about their progress with each session. I am thrilled to have the perfect combination of hands-on Physical Therapy and BASI Pilates training.

I have much respect and appreciation for the entire BASI teacher training program and staff!
