Examination Process

 

To complete your certification, you will need to complete these steps.

Attend all course modules.

Fulfill required Student Hours, which include:

  • Observation Hours: Observe BASI instructors in-studio or online.
  • Self-Practice Hours: Practice individually or with BASI instructors in groups or private sessions.
  • Student Teaching Hours: Teach others in-studio or online.

Students can start accumulating hours early on and use their Host Studio or any Pilates studio with permission (fees may apply). Mat repertoire can be practiced and taught anywhere, even at home. Maximum of 10 observation hours before Module 1.

Pass the online multiple choice exam(s).

Submit a Student Paper (Comprehensive only).

Pass the final evaluation (centralized testing) that includes:

  • Practical Exam on Repertoire.
  • Teaching Evaluation.*

Requirements By Program

 

Mat Program Requirements

Attended Course: Mat, Mat & Reformer, Foundation, or Comprehensive.

One Online Multiple Choice Exam

Student Hours: A total of 85 hours, including:

  • 15 hours of Observation.
  • 30 hours of Teaching.
  • 40 hours of Practical training.

 

Final Evaluation:

  • Teaching Evaluation: Instruct four exercises to another student.*
  • Practical Exam: Demonstrate proficiency in four Mat movements.

Mat & Reformer Program Requirements

Attended Course: Mat & Reformer, Foundation, or Comprehensive.

One Online Multiple Choice Exam

Student Hours: 225 hours in total, including:

  • 45 hours of Observation. 
  • 90 hours of Teaching. 
  • 90 hours of Practical training. 

 

Final Evaluation:

  • Teaching Evaluation: Conduct a one-hour Mat and Reformer session for an assigned client, following the BASI Block System and using repertoire taught within the course modules.*
  • Practical Exam: Demonstrate proficiency in four separate Pilates movements from the program. Movements will be chosen randomly from Modules 1 to 6 (Flex Modules 101-104).

Comprehensive Program Requirements

Attended Course: Foundation & Graduate or Comprehensive.

Two Online Multiple Choice Exams

Student Hours: 500 hours in total, including:

  • 100 hours of Observation.
  • 200 hours of Teaching.
  • 200 hours of Practical training.

Student Paper

Final Evaluation:

  • Teaching Evaluation: Design and teach a one-hour session for an assigned client, following the BASI Block System and using repertoire taught within the course modules.*
  • Practical Exam: Demonstrate proficiency in four separate Pilates movements – one from the Mat repertoire and three utilizing various Pilates apparatus. Movements will be randomly chosen from Modules 1 to 12 (Flex Modules 101-108).

 

*Note: Assigned clients for teaching evaluations will be intermediate-level with minimal to no physical restrictions and provided by the hosting studio for Final Testing. Feedback will be given after the exam privately or in a group setting. Final grades will be posted in the student’s account within 30 days after the exam. Both exams are graded based on pass or non-pass criteria outlined in the student download section.
