Kathy Standford Grant (1921-2010)

Joseph Pilates taught a small but diverse group of people which he groomed to become original Pilates instructors, known as the Elders. Of the Elders, Kathy Standford Grant was one of only two people certified to teach the Pilates method by Joseph Pilates. Kathy was a pioneer in both the worlds of dance and Pilates. Kathy studied directly under Joseph Pilates and taught the Pilates method for more than 50 years. Kathy was also an acclaimed dancer, choreographer, and arts administrator that worked closely with Arthur Mitchell and The Dance Theatre of Harlem.

During her long illustrious career, Kathy mentored several prominent names in the Pilates community including Sarita Allen, Blossom Crawford, and BASI Pilates founder Rael Isacowitz. Over the years, Rael’s relationship with Kathy evolved into a meaningful friendship that spanned many years. Rael considered Kathy to be one of his mentors and a dear friend. Not only was Kathy a pillar in the Pilates community, but in the BIPOC (Black, Indigenous and People of Color) community as well.
