BASI Pilates Italy interviewed our senior faculty member Sheri Long on her recent trip to Italy about her experiences as a Pilates instructor and lifelong journey of learning.

What sparked your initial interest for Pilates and what keeps your passion and enthusiasm alive?

I was teaching at a fitness center and the manager asked if I would like to teach Pilates. I had practiced Pilates before but did not know that much about it. I took my first certification course and knew this would be my life long journey. My passion and enthusiasm are because I love what I do! To study Pilates and the human body is exciting for me and when I teach people to move their body in a more correct manner, I know I can help them live a happier, healthier life and that is awesome!

You’ve been teaching for many years, how Pilates has changed in these years and how a Pilates instructor could benefit from training in BASI Pilates?

I don’t really think Pilates has changed I do think at times people don’t always realize that learning Pilates is a process and we must take the time and commit to learning this work. I have had other training but for me BASIi answered all my questions, The BASI approach makes sense to me. Rael Isacowitz is able to explain everything in such a clear and concise manner that, he more than anyone has helped and continues to help me understand the work with more depth and clarity.

As the next generation Pilates instructor, what are the key skills you want to instill in the students?

Most importantly never stop learning I will always be a student first and a teacher second. Remember why you chose this profession and maintain your passion and love for Pilates and teaching

We know that you never stop learning from Rael, what is the most important lesson you learned about Pilates through his teachings?

There are so many but one of the most important ones for me is to maintain the highest quality of the work and always be the best I can be.

Last question, what is most satisfying about teaching Pilates for you in Italy?

I fell in love with Italy on my first visit when I taught Modules 9-11 in Ilaria’s beautiful Studio. Now every time I visit it feels like home. I have watched BASI Italy grow and am so proud of every teacher that I have had the honor to work with and look forward to meeting more with each visit. The Passion that you all have, the dedication, and commitment to learning BASI Pilates is unbelievable! So besides loving the friends I have made, the beauty of Italy, I love the wine and food!
