Pilates for the Mature Client - 2 Day Workshop
Presenter: Sheri Long
Growing old does not have to mean giving up an active lifestyle. Whether it’s continuing to play tennis, golf or simply playing with grandchildren, Pilates can help to keep the mature client active, but the instructors who deal with them need to understand the limitations of their elderly clients.
This two-day workshop will address the specific needs of this population, musculoskeletal issues, diseases and other physical changes that are common in the older population. You will learn modifications and many variations to the original BASI repertoire. By applying the correct tools, appropriate exercises, and precautions, you will be able to take your clients safely through a session or mat class that will assist them in maintaining an active quality of life.
Day one of the workshop we will discuss the frail older adult, common diseases and how to work with this specific population. We will focus on the mat work repertoire. Mat classes can be a wonderful option for this population but even when healthy many of the exercises may be contraindicated. A number of variations will be taught in order to give a mat class that is both safe and appropriate. Day two we will discuss common musculoskeletal issues and specific needs of the mature client. We will explore variations on all of the equipment. If time allows we will end the day with a short mat class. By the end of this workshop you will have both the knowledge and the confidence to work with this wonderful population!
This workshop is approved by the PMA for 12 CECs.
