The hip and knee are highly interrelated in terms of alignment and mechanics. Learn to detect and help correct common technique errors involving the hip and knee in standing and on the Reformer. Learn new Reformer exercises designed to optimize function of the hip and knee, including exercises that challenge balance and develop valuable motor control links between the joints.

This workshop is approved by the PMA for 6 CECs


Course Objectives

Upon completion of this workshop participants will be able to:

1) Describe key biomechanical factors underlying healthy function and dysfunction of the hip and knee

2) Identify common alignment problems of the hip and knee and their inter-relationship

3) Demonstrate selected exercises that have been designed to develop strength in key muscles of the hip and knee

4) Understand the importance of including isolation/open kinematic chain exercises for key hip and knee muscle groups that develop strength and balance between right and left sides of the body

5) Understand the importance of including functional/closed kinematic chain exercises for key hip and knee muscle groups that focus on replicating functional demands in differing relationships to gravity

6) Provide cues to enhance proper exercise technique and promote optimal hip and knee mechanics in selected classical and novel Pilates exercises

7) Design a progression of exercises for the hip and knee that focuses on developing improved hip and knee function in movement in a realistic time frame
