What is Pilates?

Pilates (formerly called Contrology) is a full body conditioning system developed by Joseph Pilates in the early 20th century. This type of exercise promotes the connection between mind, body, and spirit. Pilates can be done on a Mat or on various apparatus Joseph Pilates invented, such as the Reformer, Cadillac, Wunda Chair, Ped-a-Pul, Arm Chair, or Spine Corrector.

What are the benefits of Pilates?

There is a long list of benefits Pilates gives you, not only physically, but mentally and spiritually. This includes increased muscle tone, strength, and endurance; increased core strength; increased flexibility and joint mobility; improved posture; corrected muscular imbalances; better alignment; decreased joint and back pain; improved coordination and proprioception; more efficient movement patterns; and increased circulation. In addition, the breathing techniques used in Pilates promote calmness and clarity of mind, reducing stress, anxiety, and depression. All of these benefits combined contribute to a higher quality of life. As Joseph Pilates said, “The first requisite of happiness is physical fitness.”

Can I still do Pilates if I have an injury, physical limitation, or recently had surgery?

If you have an injury, physical limitation, or recently had surgery, it would be best to speak with our Studio Coordinator to determine your specific needs. Based on your individual situation, our Studio Coordinator will be able to recommend qualified Pilates teachers on our staff for you to work with. If you recently had surgery that required physical therapy, you will need to have been cleared from physical therapy to be able to do Pilates at our studio.

Can I do Pilates if I am pregnant or recently had a baby?

Absolutely! As long as you are cleared to exercise by your doctor, our Studio Coordinator can make recommendations for you based on your level of Pilates experience.
