Great New BASI Pilates Workshops in 2012

BASI has some exciting new workshops for you to take advantage of in 2012!  We kick things off this weekend with Rael’s exciting new Powerhouse of the Upper Girdle, a  two-day upper body extravaganza!  Believe me, you don’t want to miss this opportunity to train with Rael and see the new tricks and tips he’s got up his sleeve.  Be prepared for an amazing mat class as well!

In February, BASI Senior Faculty member  Leah Stewart is taking her new workshop Postnatal Pilates Programming to northern California for the first time.  Some of you may have seen Leah’s recently released DVD entitled “LiveLife Pilates for New Mothers”.  She is also regularly featured as a postnatal Pilates expert in magazines such as Pilates Style and Mom’s Advice.  On February 12th, Mindful Movements Pilates Studio in Livermore, CA will be hosting Leah’s amazing workshop.

Leah will teach participants how to design a postnatal Pilates program, from the special exercise considerations that need to be made for women in their first days and weeks post-partum to how to safely progress postnatal clients back to performing the traditional Pilates exercises. The workshop will conclude with tips on how to teach postnatal women by practicing sensitivity, encouraging consistency and patience and finding creative ways to help clients make time for exercise.

I am very excited about another brand new BASI workshop, Pilates for Chronic Pain Syndromes, that will have its debut in March. Last year, we offered Pilates for Fibromyalgia, which was so well received that we decided to expand it into a two-day workshop covering other chronic pain syndromes, such as Lupus, Multiple Sclerosis, Parkinson’s Disease and Rheumatoid Arthritis.  This workshop is taught by the BASI Guest Faculty team of Marilyn Koval, Kathryn Russell and Robb Russell DC, from Viva Pilates in Huntington Beach.

Marilyn, Kathryn and Robb are experts in working with chronic pain clients and have developed a fantastic program, which they are generously sharing with us.  I took the workshop last year, and have had the pleasure of working with Kathryn in researching and developing the new program. It is really fascinating stuff, and Kathryn and Marilyn have come up with some wonderful exercises for this population.  Even if you don’t have clients with these specific issues, I have found the exercises to be valuable for all clients with limitations of any kind- whether it be an injured client or one who is simply deconditioned or older in years.

Don’t miss this workshop (March 17 & 18 in Costa Mesa)!  The team at Viva Pilates has put a lot of work into it, and it shows!  You will leave with a thorough understanding of the different chronic pain syndromes and how Pilates can help, as well with a bunch of new exercises to add to your repertoire!

Moving on to spring and summer, look out for more exciting new BASI workshops: Teaching Jumpboard – Beginner to Advanced Level Programming, Pilates with Props 2, Ageless Beauty – Pilates for the Mature Client, Nutrition for the Fitness Professional and The PMA Certification Test Preparation Workshop (details of the latter two will be published shortly on the BASI web site.)

What other new workshops or certificate courses would you like to see from BASI?  Please let me know!

Samantha Wood is a physical therapist and international educator for BASI Pilates, an associate faculty member and BASI’s Director of Advanced Education.
