The next major portion of the Body Arts and Science International Pilates exercise involves the Pilates mat. The Pilates mat is designed to provide you with a safe, stable foundation upon which to build your Pilates experience. The Pilates exercise mat is meant to complement the stretching, strengthening role of the Pilates ball and resistance workouts involved in Pilates exercise. The other Pilates exercises have challenged the body through building muscles, nurturing healthier muscle tone, and teaching more efficient movement. These methods have a true complement in the challenging Pilates exercise mat workouts.
The Pilates mat has a primary role of supporting the body while it learns how to move and support itself. Pilates mats are made in all sizes and dimensions to fit your body. Your Pilates exercise mat is the perfect size for you. Some of your practice on the Pilates mat is for stretching, breathing and learning exercise positions. Every Pilates mat gives you the grip and cushioning you need to warm up, stretch and exercise until you can move in ways you have only imagined and never thought possible before.
Exercises done on the Pilates mat range from beginner to very advanced. BASI Pilates™ qualified instructors start you off on simpler tasks to familiarize yourself with breathing, stretching, and coordinated movement. As you spend more time your body will learn how to move in more challenging ways. The more you participate on the Pilates exercise mat, the more strength you will build that can support your body for more advanced technique. Our first commitment is to providing our students with a working foundation from which you can build your repertoire of movement mastery. This foundation from which the Pilates exercise mat is based on is intended to give you the best possible experience and fitness level. We are proud to offer instruction on the Pilates mat to maintain the goals set out by Joseph Pilates.
When he began teaching his methods, it was simply to offer a better level of fitness to anyone interested in a higher quality of life and exercise. He began devising the system of original exercises known today as 'matwork,' or exercises done on the Pilates exercise mat. A few years later he used his regimen, 'contrology,' as a nurse and caretaker to the many men struck with wartime disease and physical injury. Even after the war, Joseph was the outspoken force behind these methods, and his wife Clara, a trained nurse, quietly incorporated his concepts and exercises in ways that benefited more seriously ill or injured clients. The Pilates mat was especially useful because it reduces the strain on heart and lungs. It is partly because of that the Pilates exercise mat is associated with a positive form of movement-based exercise that is adjusted to your level of health and fitness.
