Six modules, including lectures, exercise analysis and practice, and discussion.

Personal Study
Required after each module. Most Host locations organize tutorials (or informal study sessions) with the course instructor or assistant instructor to review and discuss material.

Mat Work classes are highly recommended and are offered at student rates at most Host locations and affiliated studios. In addition most Host locations offer “open studio time,” during which students can practice on their own or in groups.

Observation
Up to 15 hours at the Host location or an affiliate studio. (This is the recommended number of hours; they may be adjusted based upon the past experience of the student.)

Apprentice Teaching
Up to 30 hours at the Host location or an affiliate studio. (This is the recommended number of hours; they may be adjusted based upon the past experience of the student.)

Course Prerequisites

Familiarity with the teachings of Joseph Pilates

It is highly recommended that each student be familiar with the theoretical basis of Pilates and be experienced in both Mat Work and on the apparatus, before embarking on this course of study.

Experience in a related form of physical activity

Prior experience in an athletic activity develops body awareness and other attributes that are extremely beneficial to the study of Pilates.

Study in basic anatomy and physiology

It is recommended that this be a college-level course. Specialization in a related area of study, such as a physical therapy or massage therapy, is normally acceptable and will be judged on its merits.

Teaching experience is recommended

Teaching is both a natural talent and a learned skill. Any past teaching experience, even in an unrelated field, will contribute to your becoming a skilled teacher of the Pilates method.
